In this week class session, we have learned about metaphor in different text, for example, in As You Like It by William Shakespear, The Four Ages of Man by William Butler Yeats' and also the mentioning of Sphinx riddling in Oedipus The King. There were some similarity in all this texts, in which its discussed about human’s life. In As You Like It, the metaphor in the text can be seen clearly because the ‘stage’ or the theatre is compared to the whole life of man. In this texr, there were seven ‘ages’ of man mentioned such as a human begin with as an infant, then the whining school-boy, the lover, a soldier, the justice, the lean and slipper’d pantaloon and lastly a second childishness which might be the end of human’ life where someone have to start life from the very beginning all over again when we were old. Then, in Oedipus The King, the powerful king of Thebes, Oedipus managed to save his country by solving the sphinx riddle which was “What goes on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three at evening?” This riddle also related to human’s life or three ‘ages’ of man when as a baby he crawls on all fours, then as a man he walks erect, then as an old man he uses a cane.

In this week class session, we have learned about performance by referring to the text in ‘Now Read On’. During this session, some of us had to perform in front of class according to the text which is the dialogue by Edward Bond, Bingo. By doing this activity, I realized that in performance, it is actually depends on our own creativity to decided and imagine who the characters are, the setting of the conversation took place, how they speak and move to each other (tone, proxemics – the attitudes of people in relation to each other) and turn taking – the order of speakers following each other for instance interrupting and else. While doing the activity, it was very fun and enjoying seeing some of my course mate performing based on their creativity and thought. Then, we have to identify several texts whether it was an open text or not and how open the text was. We also have to figure out the setting and what the text is all about. In my opinion, this exercise is really a good introduction towards drama and makes me more interested to learn about drama.

During the second week of learning the Teaching the Language of Drama, I found that it is very interesting and fun to learn even though I am never being exposed to this subject before this. I’m really excited to learn more about this course and experiencing the beautifulness of the drama entirely. As an introduction to this course, I get to know the history of theater, which consists of 3 type of theatre which is the Greek Theatre, Roman Theatre and Medieval Theatre. Furthermore, each theatre also has their own genres, such as tragedy, comedy, tragicomedy, farce and more. Then, we also had been exposed to the conventions of theatre (the text, acts, scenes, stage directions etc.). Besides that, we also get to know more about the stage characters, turns in dramatic conversation such as proposing (initiating), building (supporting), disagreeing (challenging) and else. Lastly, we also learn how to judge a good play, which included several characters for instance a good play should make the audiences think, refresh our mind of something, shows organization in the development of the plot, concerning about human experiences and many more. All this information is presented in a nice slide show presentation and makes it easy to read and is well organized.

On the first week of learning the Teaching the Language of Drama, we had being assign by Dr. Edwin to answer several questions on point of view in the short stories. This is a good start to refresh our knowledge about what we have learned in Teaching the Language of Short Stories last semester. There were questions about types of point of view, how to differentiate between each type of point of view and many more. Then, we also been given extracts of short stories which we have to identify the point of view of the extracts and stated the reason why we choose the answer. By doing the exercises, I get to recall back that there were 5 types of point of view, which is the first person point of view that can easily recognize from the using of word ‘I’ in the story (often a major character). Then, there is the third person point of view, which is divided into three categories, which is omniscient, limited omniscient and objective point of view. For me, the exercises really help me to enhance my understanding towards the topic even more.
